Rural Library

Education in Cambodia is a rare privilege afforded to few. The education system in Cambodia is beset by many difficulties, including an acute shortage of qualified teaching staff and lack of suitable teaching materials. Throughout the entire nation UNICEF estimates that only 1 in 100 has internet access, 32% of children will finish primary school studies and 1.2% will have an opportunity of further education (compared to over 30% in the UK).

Working alongside our trusted partner, Soreaksa Himm, Ratanak International has developed a rural community library and community centre project located about a 45 minute drive north of Siem Reap. This is believed to be the only such facility of its type outside Phnom Penh and provides facilities for thousands of rural children to gain an education. Supplying books, internet, help and recreational facilities this facility has become well used over the short time it has been open.

The catchment area for this project has the potential to impact on over 10,000 children and their families, many of whom live in extreme poverty and would otherwise be unable to allow their children the luxury of education. This despite the fact that without academic qualifications these children will not be in a position to compete in the global market place for careers and will remain in the poverty cycle.

Ratanak International (UK) is delighted to engage in this partnership in providing the ongoing operational costs of the library which includes:

  • Salary for four librarians and two night guards;
  • A sport manager (community centre opens for sport activities such as volleyball, basketball, badminton, floor hockey and ping pong games and more. The manager is responsible for managing game activities within the communities);
  • Maintaining books and computers;
  • Cost of electricity and office supplies;
  • Medical expenses for all staffs;
  • Cost for the internet service.

It is our desire to expand the potential for this programme by providing additional computers and books alongside appropriately trained staff. If you would like to help please get in touch.
